Question: I obtained Permanent Resident status in Canada in 1992 and worked abroad for fifteen years.
As I plan to return, I would like to know if the process requires a renewal of my my Permanent Resident status or if I must apply for it all over.
Answer: Canadian Permanent Residents are required to live in the country for an accumulated period of two years every five years.
Except in cases where humanitarian reasons are involved, Permanent Residency status is lost when this requirement is not met. To regain such status, a new application must be lodged.
