Will Divorce Affect Canada Resident Status?

Question: I became a Canadian Permanent Resident as a dependent of my husband who was the principal applicant when we applied for immigration. Should we divorce, will I lose my status?

Answer: Generally, those who change their civil statuses prior to arrival in Canada must be relayed to Canadian immigration officers as this can affect eligibility. Upon landing in Canada, Permanent Residents will be treated individually, so divorce will usually not make any difference.
